LETTERPRESS WEDDING INVITATIONS – KUWAITI SADU PATTERN

Just before Christmas we were kept busy printing these wonderful letterpress wedding invitations for Ala’a R. from Kuwait. Ala’a is a graphic designer herself and so she actually created the designs and we printed them here in the studio.

The design for the letterpress invitation was inspired by the Kuwaiti Sadu pattern, because the reception was held in a tradition Kuwaiti house which incidentally, is now used as a Sadu museum/cultural space. The original idea was to print using Pantone gold (Pantone 871 u) but I was not convinced that the Gold would achieve the right effect on a non-coated surface as I often see in letterpress printing rather than offset where it is not an issue. However, we managed to mix a close tone which worked well with the chosen paper and contrasted it with a nice deep red.

Together we decided on the Gmund Cotton linen card and as we were printing both sides of the invitation, the back with the Sadu pattern and the front with the wedding details, we needed to bump the paper weight up to a good sturdy 600gsm. The invitations were paired with Gmund cotton linen envelopes and to finish Ala’a used a deep red wax seal with a continuation of the pattern before sending them on their way.

OUR ACHILL ISLAND ADVENTURE – THE LITTLE ART STUDIO

The Little Art Studio - Achill Island

Nick, John and Samay at the Little art studio

Achill Island scenery is breathtaking, and not just on a clear day. It doesn’t matter whether the sun is shining or the heavens are open and mother nature is dashing out her worst, Achill is simply beautiful whatever the light. As we mentioned in an earlier post, we had the pleasure of staying at the Bervie Guesthouse on Keel strand and it was here that we got to meet a very special fellow indeed, his name is John Michael Nikolai and he is the resident artist at the Bervie’s ‘Little Art Studio’ peeping out shyly from behind the guesthouse. John is a very talented photographer from the USA but his work is not just about capturing the perfect shot, but it is in the way he edits the photos digitally, the printing technique, the paper and overall finish that really make his work demand attention.

Here are a few examples of the images that we were moved to purchase on our visit to his studio.

These are just a few of the images from John’s wonderful Achill collection, but you can view many more on his homepage where you will also find some very affordable formats that will fill a picture frame nicely. John had said that Achill is a dream for any photographer, and our second visit to Sean Cannon’s Gallery we could see exactly what he meant. We will mention a little more about Sean in our next Achill post.

LETTERPRESS / HAND-PRINTED CHRISTMAS CARDS

Hand-

we have released the new pictures of our Hand-Printed Christmas Cards , they are hand-fed one by one into our antique Golding printing press. Each color needs to be printed separately, so although the outcome is something special that you can feel on your fingertips making it stand out from digitally printed cards, there is a lot of love that goes into the creation of each card, from the initial idea, sketches, the color mixing, paper preparation, printing, cutting, folding and packing. But, we love it and that is why we are here. We are printing short runs of these cards (300 for each design) so the lucky recipient will be delighted to receive what is essentially, a limited addition piece of art on finest quality paper.

LETTERPRESS KÖLN – VISITENKARTEN (100% BAUMWOLLE)

SCHNURSTRAX STRICKEN BUSINESS CARDS
here is one of our latest letterpress köln hand printed business cards. the project entailed the layout design and print for Beate R. the proprietor of the wool shop Schnurstrax Stricken situated in the Bayenthal area of Köln. Beate wanted something different, that you could feel with a haptic quality related to, and to communicate her business. Our thick and fluffy 100% cotton lettra paper was just the right thing.

LETTERPRESS KÖLN

Settling on a 2 colour / 2 sided print, we then created a new layout for the cards, allowing the wool ball to unravel and stretch nicely across to the second side of the card and spelling out the web address. It also allowed for a nice arrangement when displaying the cards together.

We are almost as thrilled as Beate with the outcome. To put it in her own words, “I like them so much, I don’ want to give them away”. A nice complement for our work 😉

OUR ACHILL ISLAND ADVENTURE

At Dookinella Beach on Achill Island. They say it in stone.

At Dookinella Beach on Achill Island. They say it in stone.

So, now it begins, back to the grind after our  fantastic Achill Island Adventure.  Last month we were frantically busy, getting our design and print projects finished for their deadlines and securing a space for our planned and long awaited two week holiday to the west coast of Ireland. And what a two weeks it was. Achill Island in County Mayo provided us with exactly what we needed, the remoteness, culture, and on this occasion, great weather. Our Irish Island adventure came to an end last weekend when we flew back from Knock Airport to Düsseldorf, but we still have a head and an SD Card full of memories that we would like to share.

We are no strangers to the island and have many friends and acquaintances to keep us up-to-date with the island’s news. For example, on arrival, our holiday cottage was not prepared and we were happy to stay once more with our friends Elizabeth and John Barrett in the Keel village for a few nights. Elizabeth and John run the Bervie guesthouse which is situated right on the end of keel beach and it really is a delight from the minute you arrive till the moment you leave.

Saying goodbye to Elizabeth & John at their wonderful Bervie guesthouse.

Like every other guest, we made much use of their well stocked reading room/sitting room, reading up on the islands history and the many notable people who had Achill Island Adventure of their own. The Irish painter Paul Henry, Nobel Prize winning author, Heinrich Böll, Novelist Graham Greene and American Painter Robert Henri have all spend considerable time on the island. As fans of Paul Henry’s Achill landscapes and seascapes we were also very happy to discover the work of Robert Henri, who focused on portraits of the Achill children between 1913 and 1924. A few examples below.

JAKOB & ESTHER PRINTING THE FIRST LETTERPRESS WEDDING INVITATIONS

Print_Own_Letterpress_Invitations

After working closely with Jakob and Esther on their letterpress wedding invitations we asked them to come along to the studio as we were ready to print the first colour. Jakob and Esther joined us as I just finished setting up and inking the disk on our Rodi press (Our 1886 Golding Official Press) ready for the first colour print of their wedding invitations. We had suggested they came by in order to print the first invitation themselves and they were thrilled to do so. After a toast and a bit more fiddling with the rollers on the Press we were ready to go. Here are a few pictures of the printing and the finished product that Esther collected a few days later.

this was the first round of sketches of the couple and the general idea of the banner. It was a little tricky to get Esther just right so that she was recognizable, but we got there in the end which you can see below.

esther & jackos’ invitations were a bespoke design and we’re almost as pleased with the outcome as they are. although custom/bespoke design is a large part of what samay and I do here at kikisoso, we are currently working on a range of wedding invitation sets which are based on a customizable templates. these will allow you the option to choose colours, fonts and papers according to your personal preference. there is a large selection of papers available for your invitations and we can order almost any paper of your choice if you have a very special requirement.
