EN: Luka Balic approached Kikisoso after viewing our business cards that we created for UK graphic Designer David Airey. We used the same 600 gsm weight cotton card from quality paper manufacturer Gmund. A simple one sided – one colored letterpress print onto the exquisit cotton paper.

Kikisoso has been printing Cologne’s own Bienwerk honey labels for a a while now and just recently they asked us to design and print a special branded label for one of their best customers. Exciting stuff for the Kikisoso team. Törtchen Törtchen literally translates in English as ‘Little Tarts – Little Tarts’, it works better in German of course. They create amazing, beautiful and colorful cakes, tarts and french pastries etc. it is a patisserie with artistic flair making it stand out.
For the labels we wanted to do something original but yet make sure the branding was not ignored. A colorful splash (brand colour of course) contrasted with the negative logo on Bienwerks traditional black white cotton labels was perfect. Bienwerk’s honey comes in 360g squeezable bottles and 325g glass jars and it is already starting to populate Colognes best cafes and restaurants. You will also soon be able to buy it online, so watch this space.
you can see the original Bienwerk logos here and also a re-brand of their logo and business card here, all carried out by Kikisoso earlier this year.

Designer and programmer Berndt Kraemer designed the layout for these cards for his client Kai Bretall and he wanted something a bit special to make the cards stand out from the crowd when his client visited business gatherings. Blind deboss and edge painting was the solution. This is where the edge painting really takes over. Using a heavy stock, in this instance the 100% cotton 600gsm Gmund New Grey the orange/yellow edge colour was the perfect contrast.
Edge pained with a lovely bright and contrasting orange. Here you can see how thick these cards really are. With edge painting it is best to use thicker stock to make the colour pop.
The rear side of the cards was treated with a blind de-boss meaning without inking up, we pressed the photopolymer plate hard against the cotton paper to produce an impression into the card which was not only visible but could be felt with the fingertips running over the soft surface, basically that’s what the new era of modern letterpress is all about.
See more of our letterpress business cards here and here. If you are interested in having your own business cards letterpress cards printed then simply drop us a line here and we will be happy to give you a competitive quotation. We also printed the business cards for the UK’s well know Graphic Designer David Airey, also printed on Gmund cotton 600gsm paper with an orange edge finish. You can read more about that here
These quirky letterpress wedding invites went out the door a few weeks ago for one of our customers who will be celebrating their wedding this September in Spain. Naomi and Owen came to us with a ‘Wes Anderson styli’ theme, namely using the Futura bold font throughout the design. If you are wondering what that means, it is because Wes Anderson uses Futura Bold for everything to do with his films from film posters to end credits. So we decide to create some bold chunky invitations in Futura bold with a difference, we wrote it by hand, or rather printed it out and then traced it by hand. The plates were then created and a rich navy rubber based ink chosen for the print.
Here you can see the text biting the paper giving a lovely haptic quality to the invitations
The cards were printed on cotton paper in a extra heavy weight to allow a deeper impression and provide a nice base for a bright orange painted edge. Edge painting was perfect for these invitations as they were until this point very simple and needed the boost. After trying out a few ideas for the rear of the cards, Naomi decided on going for an illustration related to the restaurant where the wedding would be held in Palamos and so that’s where the giant shrimp with the book and the Glass of champers came from. Not to upset the colour balance too much we decided to print the illustration in a light grey which worked very well with the navy type and orange edge painting.
The bright edge painting makes the cards glow when they are stacked together. A lovely effect for a simple card

We created (designed and Printed) these simple business cards for Cologne Bienwerk Imkerei (local beekeeper and honey producer). Printed on soft cotton card and a decent impression easily felt on the fingertips.
Here you can see what makes letterpress different from the standard business card.
The paper is extremely soft to the touch and with the impression of the logo and text gives it that haptic and luxurious quality with which standard cards just can’t compare.
read about Bienwerk’s honey labels on our earlier post here. See more of our letterpress cards here. Alternatively, you can see our edge painted letterpress business cards for UK Graphic Designer David Airey or a preview of Cologne based designer Nick Bohlen’s 2 colour cards printed on Cranes lettra cotton stock.

EN – Local beekeeper and honey producer Frank Methien dropped by the studio with an idea for the packaging for his honey and it didn’t involve bees. As you would expect, most honey labels and honey packaging is based around the bees and the natural honeycombs hexagonal form. Frank didn’t want bees and he didn’t want hexagons… he wanted a whale. At first we were a little unsure, but in the end it all made perfect sense and we are chuffed with the outcome.
The beekeepers’ smoking tool featured on one of the labels.
The project started with a re-design of the Bienwerk logo, just to make it a little bit less serious allowing the label and branding for Bienwerk to be a little more playful. Logo completed, we got to work on the illustrations. The first illustrations were of the Bee Keeper’s tools in the end choosing the Smoker as the most interesting. The second chosen illustration was of the whale you see below.
The whale is featured on the second label and the translation from German is ‘Save the whale… eat honey!’
If you reside in the Cologne Südstadt and want to get your hands on a jar of Frank’s tasty honey then you can get in touch with him here.

These note cards have been very popular with our kids and, were originally just created for them to send to family members for birthdays etc. They were so well received, we decided to make them into a range of note cards for our online store. We chose the fox, the owl, the hedgehog and the squirrel as these were the animals our kids loved the most. However, we want to add to the range and not just a few either. Let us hear your ideas for other animals that you would like to see on the note cards to help the range expand. We will have a competition to win 2 sets of 8 of the note cards. Remember these are premium hand printed cards that will make an impression however you choose to use them. Sign up for our newsletter and contact us with at least one animal suggestion for the note card range and you will be automatically entered into the draw.

This Save the Date card really grabbed my attention this morning as I was browsing the net with a mouthful of toast. A really creative Do-It-Yourself kit for the opening of a bicycle shop by ‘Save the Date Projects’ and ‘Daily Bicycle Co’. The individual parts of the bicycle were laser cut from thick duplexed conqueror card so the recipient could easily pop them out and fix them together.

Letterpress sorry card with pink and taupe tissue lined envelope option. These lovely apology cards are just off the press at kikisoso creative studio. Printed with a great earthy grey achieved by mixing a dark grey and taupe ink, after printing each card was hand finished using a watercolor wash making every card ‘even more ‘ individual. Gmund 100% cotton stock was used for it’s high quality properties and finish and of course we were looking for a slightly off-white appearance rather than the bright white house paper we usually use. The impression into the soft paper can be seen and felt on the fingertips, the real treat of the letterpress print finish.
Printed on high quality Gmund cotton stock hand finished with a pink watercolor wash.
for him / from him. Extra manly taupe colored envelope
Now available on the kikisoso online store. So if you know your wrong or just feel like taking the blame for a change then you can get some brownie points by giving your partner one of these special cards. You know they’re worth it.
Martina from Me and Mietz ordered a set of our cute little ‘kiki-petits‘ for her minimal business card. Martina’s runs a fashion blog and she gave me a little explanation into the name. Mietz (short for Mietzekatze) is a little white fluffy cat who accompanies her during her daily life and when traveling. Mietz the cat is illustrated by talented illustrator Maya under her own column on the blog called “Mietz by Maya”.

We printed these Letterpress Business cards for our friend and Cologne Südstadt neighbor Nick Bohlen. Nick supplied the layout for the cards and we printed them on 100% cotton stock. The orange colour is often hard to achieve using digital printing on a CMYK pallet. This is one of the beauties of letterpress printing, where we can use the Pantone base colors to mix almost any colour we need.
A lovely bright orange without the brown tinge often seen in digital printing using a CMYK colour system
We achieved a fair impression on the cards keeping in mind that we never want to have any evidence of the print on the rear of the card. The logo signet of the ‘n’ and ‘b’ in Nick’s logo, raises nicely from the background, a haptic quality synonymous with embossing. The orange was a delight to print, requiring only one pass on the printer and therefore keeping the colour true. As letterpress ink has a certain transparency, a second pass would change the colour significantly. This is why sometimes we have to mix a colour for 2 passes or for a single pass and it can all even be determined by room temperature, paper or even the consistency of the ink.
Project info:
Orange mixed to match Nick’s orange color chip. 100% Pantone black used for the text.
100% bright white cotton card used for it’s brightness, soft finish and great impression.

EN – Circular business cards are certainly not your everyday run of the mill calling cards, but then neither is our client Alan Edwards’s new company Spotz. Although the company has not yet been launched it will certainly be something very different and thats why we wanted to create these special little ‘Spotz’ cards to stand out.
The design was very simple as we decided to leave the most details out of Alan’s card, in fact just a name, title and web address to create a little curiosity while the business takes shape behind the scenes. The first idea was to print the cards on 600gsm card with a double sided print as you can see if you click here. The problem that we had with the one thickness card was that when we die-cut the circles the edges were not flat but slightly rounded due to the die pinching the soft card and pressing it hard against the platen. This meant that it would not be possible to edge paint the cards as planned. after experimenting a little with the thicker card we decided that we could do something a little different and achieve a colored edge without painting.
The idea was to sandwich a thick black card between two 300gsm cotton layers and this worked a treat. Of course this was a lot of work, the letterpress printing was down first for both sides on the 300gsm paper and then they were cut into 5 cm circles along with the 300gsm jet-black card stock before being duplexed. The result, a beautifully thick double sided circular card with a lovely impression and a colored edge to boot. We are very happy with the result and they have just been shipped off to Alan in London.
We at kikisoso have been using baker twines for our stationery, wedding invitations and business card packaging for some time now. We think that the twines give our clients packaging a special finish and of course, they also make any package or gift a delight to receive. And, SO… you can now buy the same luxuriously thick (2 mm) 100% bakers twines from our online store.
Below you can see the current color range, which we will be expanding in the near future.

Just before Christmas we were kept busy printing these wonderful letterpress wedding invitations for Ala’a R. from Kuwait. Ala’a is a graphic designer herself and so she actually created the designs and we printed them here in the studio.
The design for the letterpress invitation was inspired by the Kuwaiti Sadu pattern, because the reception was held in a tradition Kuwaiti house which incidentally, is now used as a Sadu museum/cultural space. The original idea was to print using Pantone gold (Pantone 871 u) but I was not convinced that the Gold would achieve the right effect on a non-coated surface as I often see in letterpress printing rather than offset where it is not an issue. However, we managed to mix a close tone which worked well with the chosen paper and contrasted it with a nice deep red.
Together we decided on the Gmund Cotton linen card and as we were printing both sides of the invitation, the back with the Sadu pattern and the front with the wedding details, we needed to bump the paper weight up to a good sturdy 600gsm. The invitations were paired with Gmund cotton linen envelopes and to finish Ala’a used a deep red wax seal with a continuation of the pattern before sending them on their way.
A close up view of the Kuwaiti Sadu pattern on the rear of the invitations.
the heart continues the Sadu pattern on the rear of the cards.

Achill Island scenery is breathtaking, and not just on a clear day. It doesn’t matter whether the sun is shining or the heavens are open and mother nature is dashing out her worst, Achill is simply beautiful whatever the light. As we mentioned in an earlier post, we had the pleasure of staying at the Bervie Guesthouse on Keel strand and it was here that we got to meet a very special fellow indeed, his name is John Michael Nikolai and he is the resident artist at the Bervie’s ‘Little Art Studio’ peeping out shyly from behind the guesthouse. John is a very talented photographer from the USA but his work is not just about capturing the perfect shot, but it is in the way he edits the photos digitally, the printing technique, the paper and overall finish that really make his work demand attention.
The day we climbed Croagh Patrick – John Michael Nikolai
Here are a few examples of the images that we were moved to purchase on our visit to his studio.
Precipice and Matador – Achill’s Ronan Halpin sculpture photographed on Keel strand – John Michael Nikolai

yip, that’s a dolphin… John gets up very early 😉
These are just a few of the images from John’s wonderful Achill collection, but you can view many more on his homepage where you will also find some very affordable formats that will fill a picture frame nicely. John had said that Achill is a dream for any photographer, and our second visit to Sean Cannon’s Gallery we could see exactly what he meant. We will mention a little more about Sean in our next Achill post.
we have released the new pictures of our Hand-Printed Christmas Cards , they are hand-fed one by one into our antique Golding printing press. Each color needs to be printed separately, so although the outcome is something special that you can feel on your fingertips making it stand out from digitally printed cards, there is a lot of love that goes into the creation of each card, from the initial idea, sketches, the color mixing, paper preparation, printing, cutting, folding and packing. But, we love it and that is why we are here. We are printing short runs of these cards (300 for each design) so the lucky recipient will be delighted to receive what is essentially, a limited addition piece of art on finest quality paper.
We have already added the Christmas letterpress cards to our online shop, but this post is for you the kikisoso blog subscribers to keep you up to date with kikisoso product news. There are currently two different ranges, the ‘faces’ collection and the ‘Snowy’ collection and there are three beautiful simple designs in each range.
